Both sides were fearful and distrustful of the other because they were unknown and alien. The British thought the Indians were effiminate because their women worked the land while the men hunted; the Indians thought the same of the British because the men worked the land. Each thought the other stupid and uncivilized (the English smelled bad; the Indians wore no clothes), and they each thought the other was Godless, because they worshipped different Gods.
